US Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said she is resigning from the House of Representatives because she refuses to be like a “battered wife”, the announcement comes after a dramatic row with President Donald Trump.

Her departure marks a surprising turn of events, which few would have imagined a few months ago, writes Reuters.

Greene, a Republican from Georgia, has been one of Trump's closest allies and an outspoken supporter of his “America First” agenda, but the rift between the two has deepened in recent months, particularly over the release of government documents related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“I refuse to be a battered wife”

In a 10-minute video posted on social media, Greene said she was driven to resign by the prospect of facing a Trump-backed Republican opponent in the primaries and a possible Democratic takeover of the House in next year's midterm elections.

She also complained that Congress has largely been “put on the backburner” since Trump returned to the presidency in January.

“I have too much self-respect and dignity, I love my family too much, and I don't want my dear district to have to endure some painful, hateful internal election against me from the president we all fought for, just to fight and win the election, while the Republicans will probably lose the midterms,” Greene said.

“I refuse to be a battered wife who hopes that everything will pass and get better,” she added.

Greene lamented the state of American politics, arguing that neither Republicans nor Democratic lawmakers are working to solve the nation's problems, including the rising cost of living.

Trump's reaction: “It's wonderful”

Interviewed by ABC News, Trump said Greene's resignation, which will take effect Jan. 5, is “great news for the country. It's wonderful.”

The public spat between Trump and Greene fueled concerns among some Republicans that Trump's “Make America Great Again” MAGA base could fracture a year before the midterm elections, when Democrats hope to regain control of Congress.

Greene's resignation will reduce the Republican majority in the House of Representatives to 218 members to the Democrats' 213. Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

Greene has increasingly displayed his independence from Trump, joining House efforts to force the release of the Epstein files despite his objections, criticizing House leadership for not doing more to address health care costs during the recent government shutdown and calling Israel's attack on Gaza genocide.

In turn, Trump has become more critical of her.

Before the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to release the Epstein files, he called it “treasonous” and an “embarrassment” to the Republican Party. He withdrew his support for her and called her an “angry lunatic”.

Taylor Greene: I defended girls raped at 14 and trafficked

In his video, Greene defended his vote on the Epstein case. “For standing up for American women who were raped at age 14, trafficked and used by rich and powerful men I should not be made a traitor and threatened by the president of the United States that I fought for,” she said.

Greene said she was proud of her conservative votes, adding, in an allusion to Trump, that “loyalty should be mutual.”

Her House ally, Rep. Thomas Massie, wrote on X that Greene “embodies what a true parliamentarian should be.”

Barbara Comstock, a former Republican member of the House of Representatives and Trump critic, praised Greene's decision on social media.

“She doesn't want to be a Republican 'battered wife' who accepts Trump's abuse and receives death threats, pretending everything is fine just to end up in the minority. Well done to them,” Comstock wrote.
