Michaelmas
On this day, a church holiday is celebrated – the Council of the Archangel Michael and other disembodied Heavenly Powers, on which angels and archangels are honored. The holiday was established in the 4th century by the Council of Laodicea.
Since in Rus' there was often a thaw on this day and the roads thawed, it was sometimes called Mikhailovsky mud. People said: “If Mikhailo destroyed the path, don’t wait for him until winter Nikola.” However, no less rare were the Mikhailovsky frosts, which were described differently: “Mikhailov builds bridges.”
Mikhail's weather was used to judge the coming winter. If you saw frost that day, you had to wait for more snow. If Michaelmas began with fog, they prepared for a thaw.
Michaelmas holidays began in the villages, marking the end of all summer and autumn rural work. In addition, by this time, peasants received proceeds for goods sold, and workers were paid the money they earned. The housewives set the tables, prepared delicious dishes, and feasts and festivities began. On this day it was considered not shameful to visit and receive guests.
They usually treated themselves to pies made from fresh flour, honey, and fried meat. Celebrations often dragged on for a whole week – until the strict Filippov fast.
