The traditional chess festival “Borodino Field – Link of Times” took place in the city of Borodino, Krasnoyarsk Territory.
The autumn competitions, like the spring ones, were dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, which filled the tournament with a deep symbolic meaning, emphasizing the connection between strategic thinking on the battlefield and at the chessboard, the festival organizers noted.
As part of the festival, a thematic exhibition was organized highlighting the contribution of the miner chess players who were at the origins of the development of this game in Borodino. The traditions they established continue to be preserved among city residents of all ages.
Andrey Velikoselsky, Director for Economics and Finance of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech:
“We are in a city with great prospects, where wonderful people live who not only know how to do excellent work, but also maintain good sports traditions.” The company representative also noted the significant contribution of the head of the Belaya Ladya club, Sergei Komogortsev, through whose efforts the chess movement in the city is not only supported, but also dynamically developing, discovering new talents.
The geography of the tournament testified to its high status: more than sixty athletes from Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kansk and Zelenogorsk gathered to participate in the competition at the chessboards. Among them were both recognized masters, in the person of grandmaster Dmitry Khegai, and multiple champions of the Irkutsk region.
The head of the club, Sergei Komogortsev, in his speech warmly remembered the founders of the chess movement in Borodino – front-line soldiers. He mentioned Vasily Vasilyevich Zhitnyak, who, although not a strong player, loved children with all his soul and instilled in them a love of wise play, as well as Mikhail Danilenko, Ivan Lapkov, Ivan Koltsov. Their names are forever inscribed in the history of local chess, demonstrating how tradition is passed on from mentor to student.
The format of the festival included competitions in various categories: personal and team blitzes, a ladies' tournament, children's meetings and a special generation tournament were held in parallel. The atmosphere was filled not only with a competitive spirit, but also with mutual support.
The young participants showed themselves brilliantly. Ten-year-old resident of Borodino Daryana Vares, having defeated all her rivals, said: “I would like the chess opponent to be stronger, it’s more interesting to play.”
In turn, the winner of the ladies’ tournament, Alexandra Trishina, noted the high competition in her group and shared her plans:
“I plan to go to a grandmaster school in Zelenogorsk in winter, improve my level, and study the experience of the masters. This year I attended the Siberian Federal District Championship and the Krasnoyarsk Territory Championship. I took third place at the regional blitz competition. I’ve been studying chess for seven years now, and I really like this game.”
The best result in the individual competition was demonstrated by grandmaster Dmitry Khegai. In the generation tournament, Borodino resident Andrei Bersimenko won among children, and Alexander Gvozdik won among adults. Among the young chess players, Yaroslav Bulygin and Daryana Vares also distinguished themselves.
The best chess players among SUEK-Krasnoyarsk employees were also recognized. Andrey Velikoselsky once again became the leader in this nomination. The second place was taken by the electrical mechanic of the Borodino open-pit mine Alexey Yakubenko, the third place was taken by the instrument and automation mechanic of the Borodino Mechanical Repair Plant Alexey Loposhnichenko.
In team wrestling, chess players from Irkutsk won the championship. The Borodino open-pit mine team took second place, and the SUEK-Krasnoyarsk team rounded out the top three.
All winners and prize-winners of the festival were awarded diplomas, medals and memorable gifts from the organizers.
