Sanctions on Media Land. The West responds to ransomware attacks from Russia


Ransomware attacks work by blocking access to the IT systems of companies or public institutions and then extorting a ransom to unlock them. According to the US Department of the Treasury, Media Land provided key services to criminals to carry out such attacks on companies in the US and allied countries.

Sanctions against individuals and companies
The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on three people associated with the management of Media Land and three sister companies of this company. At the same time, British authorities imposed restrictions on Media Land, two other Russian hosting companies and four people suspected of involvement in cyber crimes. British sanctions include, among others: asset freeze and travel ban.
The statement from the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that cyberattacks targeting Great Britain caused losses to the country's economy of £14.7 billion in 2024.

Australia joins the action
Australia announced it was introducing similar measures to the United States and the United Kingdom, emphasizing the need to work with allies to counter Russian ransomware networks. It was noted that these attacks affected, among others, hospitals, schools and enterprises.
