Financial Times reveals secret cooperation between Russia and Iran in nuclear program


The information presented by “FT” shows that Iranian nuclear experts made two secret trips to Russia over the past year. In November, they met in St. Petersburg with representatives of Laser Systems, a US-sanctioned company working on dual-use technologies. Jim Lamson of the California-based James Martin Center for the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons pointed out that the Iranians could be looking for laser technology that would allow the development of nuclear weapons without the need to conduct nuclear tests.

Iran and Russia. Nuclear cooperation is strengthening
The documents the British daily relies on include letters, travel records and corporate materials from Iran and Russia. They show that the first visit of Iranian scientists took place in August 2024, when they visited Russian scientific institutes potentially involved in nuclear weapons research. However, the full scale of cooperation between Moscow and Tehran remains unknown.

Iran's nuclear program. Tehran assures that it is peaceful
Tehran officially claims that its nuclear program is purely peaceful, and Moscow publicly opposes Iran's military ambitions. However, as “FT” emphasizes, the actions of both countries may indicate something completely different. Laser Systems, whose activities were brought to attention, did not respond to the daily's request for comment.
