The elections for the Capital City Hall could strain the coalition. Kelemen Hunor: “There will be some consequences, tensions”

The President of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, warns that the results of the December 7 elections for the Capital City Hall could create tensions in the governing coalition. The Hungarian leader claims that, of the three main candidates, only one can win, and the defeat of the others could have consequences for relations between the parties.

Asked by the RFI channel if he has a favorite, Kelemen Hunor answered negatively, explaining that he is not allowed to support someone and that he does not even vote in Bucharest. “The problem is what will happen to the coalition after the elections, that if we take it like this, very briefly, one out of three can win, the others will be losers. Someone else might win, that's another problem”he pointed out.
The elections in Bucharest, with national impact
Asked why the election for the Capital City Hall would have consequences for the coalition, Hunor explained: “Well, any choice, when someone loses, has consequences, whether you like it or not. You see, elections in Bucharest are seen a little differently than any other local election, at the level of local authorities. Băsescu, after one term and a bit, became the president of Romania. Nicușor Dan, after one term and a bit, won the presidential elections. He is, perhaps, the most legitimate person voted by the people, in this sense I am talking about legitimacy, after the president“.
Tensions and legitimacy within parties
Kelemen Hunor emphasized that even within the parties the winners will gain more legitimacy vis-a-vis their leaders: “And in the parties, if Drula wins, he certainly has more legitimacy than president Fritz, if Băluță wins, the same, against Grindeanu, if Ciucu wins, again, against Bolojan. Only one can win and there will be some consequences, some tensions, I hope they will not spoil the work in the coalition“, added the UDMR leader.
