Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican member of the US House of Representatives, apologizes for her role in “toxic politics.” In an interview with CNN on Sunday, she said she is facing death threats because of the rift between her and President Donald Trump.

“The most hurtful thing that (Trump) said, which is absolutely untrue, is that he called me a traitor, and that's extremely wrong, and those are the kinds of words used that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger,” said Greene, a former political ally of the Republican US president.

Journalist Dana Bash pointed out that he did not react when “such attacks or criticisms of the president” were directed at other people.

Greene, who CNN notes has embraced far-right conspiracy theories during her rise to politics, said she realizes she attended or gave speech that resulted in threats against others, and that it was a point of reflection for her.

“I think this criticism is fair and I would like to say, humbly, that I am sorry for taking part in toxic politics. It is very bad for our country (…). It was something I thought about a lot,” she said.

Open conflict between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Donald Trump

The 51-year-old congresswoman had been a supporter of Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, but the president announced on Friday that she was withdrawing her support. He launched further criticism on Saturday, calling her “traitorous” to the Republican Party.

Later, according to AFP, Greene said in a post on X that she had been “contacted by private security firms with warnings about my safety as a series of threats against me are fueled and encouraged by the most powerful man in the world.”

Greene had accused Trump of trying to intimidate other Republicans ahead of next week's vote on the release of the Epstein files, calling it “amazing how hard he's fighting to prevent the release of the Epstein files, that he's getting to this level.”

On Wednesday, Greene was one of only four House Republicans to join Democrats in signing a petition to force a vote on the release of all Justice Department files related to the late Epstein, accused of sex crimes against minors.
