Italian Cristiano Bergodi (61), sacked by Rapid in April 2024 after an unexpected run of four successive play-off defeats, now says the management's decision was “hasty”.
Rapid had entered the play-off from the 2nd place, only four points behind the leader FCSB.
Bergodi still feels the break from Rapid: “I was very disappointed”
For Bergodi, the regular season performances, 30 solid games, should have weighed more than the four setbacks in the start of the playoffs.
“I have no regrets that I would have done anything wrong. The stats clearly showed where we were after the regular season. He could quickly fight for the title.
After that things happened that were beyond my control. I kept quiet for a long time… more could have been said!
I was very disappointed, because I had a job done for 6-8 months. I didn't deserve to leave, because I built that team“, said Bergodi, according to digisport.ro.
The Italian points out that you cannot “delete” an entire championship just because of a poor play-off start:
“You can't fire a coach who's there. 30 games is more important than 5-10 in the play-offs.”
Instead of Bergodi, Rapid installed Bogdan Lobonț, but he was dismissed at the end of the play-off.
Bergodi has a solid start at Cluj University
On October 23, Cristiano Bergodi returned to football and took over Cluj University.
On the Transylvania bench, the Italian already has 3 wins and only one defeat.
One of the most experienced foreign coaches in Romania
Cristiano Bergodi coached several teams in Romanian football: Sepsi, Craiova University, FC Voluntari, ASA Tg. Mureș, FCSB, Poli Iasi, CFR Cluj and FC National.
The former Lazio captain began his coaching career in Romania, at FC Național, and later also coached in Italian football: Modena, Pescara and Brescia.
He managed to win the Romanian Cup twice with Sepsi Sf. Gheorghe and he also won two Supercups: one with Sepsi and one with Rapid in the 2006-2007 season.
