Folk calendar
Akindinus and Pigasius
On this day, Orthodox people commemorate Saints Akindinos, Pigasius and with them the 7 thousand martyrs who suffered for Christianity in the 4th century.
On this day in Rus' they said: “Akindin kindles the barn, and Pigasius extinguishes the sun.” This saying reflects two significant phenomena for the people. Firstly, the daylight hours were decreasing, therefore, all the work that was possible had to be carried into the house and carried out by the light of a torch or candle.
In addition, from that time on, grain was actively dried in barns by lighting a fire under it. On this fire, peasant children loved to bake potatoes and tell different stories about the spirits living in village buildings.
Russian people believed that rams and rigs are inhabited by brownies, who never appear in their real form, but appear only in the guise of a person. Ovinnik was not considered an evil spirit. At least he didn’t bother anyone with heating the barn and drying the grain. It was only necessary to first ask him for permission to do this work. However, if someone offended the barn grower, he could burn the entire crop in anger, spreading the fire to the sheaves.
In addition, on Akindina, peasant women crushed flax and prepared it either for sale or for spinning.
