Nelu Iordache, a new conviction for corruption: 18 years in prison for the “king of asphalt”, after merging the sentences

Nelu Iordache was convicted on Friday, November 14, by the Bucharest Court in a new case, in which he is accused of trying to bribe a former head of the Environmental Protection Agency (APM) Ilfov Genica Bădănoiu to obtain an environmental permit at a waste transfer station. The decision is not final.

According to the sentence, Nelu Iordache received 5 years in prison for bribery and 4 years for buying influence. These sentences were merged with convictions from other files, namely the Transalpina file (6 years) and the file of fraud with European funds allocated for the construction of the Nădlac – Arad highway (11 years and 9 months), ultimately resulting in 18 years and 1 month in prison, according to Agerpres.
Iordache is currently in prison, having been incarcerated since September 2021.
In the file related to the waste transfer station, Genica Bădănoiu was sentenced to 2 years in prison with suspension for influence peddling.
According to the DNA investigators, as a de facto shareholder of a commercial company with household waste management activity, on December 19, 2019, Nelu Iordache claimed, directly, to the executive director of APM Ilfov, Genica Bădănoiu, to issue an environmental authorization for his company, related to the waste transfer station in Tunari, Ilfov county, leaving her to he believes that he has influence on some people with management positions at the Ministry of the Environment.
He promised Genică Bădănoiu that, in exchange for issuing the authorization, he would intervene in such a way that she would be maintained in the position of executive director of APM Ilfov. On December 24, 2019, the respective authorization was issued.
According to the cited source, Iordache would have indirectly promised, on July 9, 2020, through an intermediary, the director of APM Ilfov the sum of 30,000 lei, of which he would have offered 15,000 lei, through the same person, to obtain the issuance of an environmental authorization for his company related to a waste transfer station located in Popeşti Leordeni. Genica Bădănoiu refused this money on July 10, 2020.
