During the interview, Bolojan explained that the measure targets companies that accumulate significant losses. “Problem companies must be liquidated. Next week the list will be finalized”said the prime minister, emphasizing that the freight railway operator is included in this list.

According to the data of the Ministry of Finance, last year CFR Marfă registered a loss of 328 million lei, against a turnover of 677 million lei, and has approximately 3,000 employees. Financial analyzes show that the accumulated losses in the last five years exceed one billion lei, and the company is in a difficult financial situation. “Loss of 328 million lei and debts exceeding the threshold of one billion lei suggest that the national operator is in a critical financial situation”notes the analysis company RisCo.

According to public data, CFR Marfă has been reporting annual losses since 2010, and at the end of 2024, the company's debts were 4.7 billion lei. At the same time, the report of the Agency for Monitoring and Evaluation of the Performance of Public Enterprises (AMEPIP) indicates that CFR Marfă recorded the biggest losses among all state companies last year.

The difficult financial situation is not limited to CFR Marfă. Other state companies with considerable losses in 2024 are Electrocentrale Craiova, Unifarm, Compania Municipală Termoenergetica, Metrorex and Complexul Energetic Valea Jiului, according to former Deputy Prime Minister Dragoș Anastasiu.
