Folk calendar
Kuzminki. Old style date: November 1.
On this day, the memory of two brothers, the unmercenary saints Cosmas and Damian, who lived in the second half of the 3rd and early 4th centuries, is celebrated. The young men learned the science of medicine, and the Lord, in gratitude for their righteous lifestyle, gave them the ability to heal the sick. Cosmas and Damian never took payment from people, which is why they were called unmercenary.
“Kuzminki is the wake of autumn,” people said and once again celebrated the arrival of winter. In some areas of autumn, according to tradition, time is set aside from the Second Spas to Kuzminki.
The last weddings were played out on Kuzma (Cosma) and Demyan (Damian) – the happiness of the young people was forged. By the way, saints were revered in Rus' both as guardians of the family hearth and as patrons of all artisans and crafts – mainly blacksmithing and women's handicrafts. From Kuzminki, women sat down to spin wool in order to knit winter clothes from it or weave warm fabrics.
Kuzminki was also a youth holiday. The girls gathered together in a free hut, set the table (porridge was considered an obligatory dish) and invited single guys. Gatherings often continued until dawn, and after that the young people, having finished with the treats, went to steal the neighbor's chickens.
Another custom is associated with poultry. On this day, chickens celebrated their name day. Rich people sent chickens as gifts to poor relatives. Peasant women brought birds as gifts to the boyars, and they in return presented them with ribbons. It was customary to keep such “petition chickens” in high esteem – feed them oats, barley and never kill them. And the eggs they laid were considered medicinal.
On the day of Kuzma and Demyan, they paid attention to signs of the weather. If the day turned out to be snowy, one should expect a large flood of rivers in the spring. The leaf that remained on the tree until Kuzminki foreshadowed frost next winter.
