Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timișoara and the leader of USR, announced on Thursday morning that he received a positive approval for obtaining Romanian citizenship after passing the interview test.

“Romania, ready, I'm one of yours!”, wrote Fritz on his Facebook page.

“Thank you, Romania, for welcoming me into your home 22 years ago. You made me an adult, you made me European, you made me more tenacious, warmer, more inventive. And now you made me a Romanian with the right documents. The oath will be taken next time,” he said

“Long live Romania, long live Europe!”, wrote Fritz at the end of the post to which he also added two images: one of him 20 years ago when he was a volunteer at a children's home in Timișoara and one from now, as mayor of the municipality.

What Dominic Fritz did at his citizenship interview

Dominic Fritz gave the interview for citizenship on Wednesday, and afterwards he stated that he even missed a question regarding the Dacian deities that he had talked about earlier, when he said that many of the things that need to be known in the interview for citizenship would be difficult for a Romanian as well.

“First I had to write an article from the Constitution after dictation, to see if I knew how to write. Then I had to read a few sentences from a story and then I extracted 12 of the 400 questions that I told about,” the USR leader reported on Facebook.

He was also asked to say who Basarab I was and what is the capital of Romania. “Then this question actually dropped: List two Dacian deities and I knew of Zalmoxis!” Fritz continued.

He also said that he had to explain a saying – “I feel sorry for you, but my heart breaks for me” – and he had to recite the Romanian anthem.

“I think I did well. It was quite a pleasant experience and I will find out the result soon,” Fritz added.

Dominic Fritz, originally from Germany, is on his second term as mayor of Timisoara. The mayor submitted the file for Romanian citizenship in July 2024.
