Experts conducted a study of the genomes of 166 thousand Russians and found significant differences in the tolerance of anesthesia. According to the results, residents of Krasnoyarsk demonstrate one of the best reactions – 30.51% of the population have a genetic predisposition to postoperative nausea and vomiting.

The study revealed a geographic pattern. The highest risk of complications after anesthesia is observed among residents of Perm (35.7%), Nizhny Novgorod (33.57%) and Samara (33.53%). Novosibirsk and Omsk shared the position of cities with the best indicators with Krasnoyarsk – 30.01% and 29.97%, respectively.
The differences are explained by the prevalence of the KCNB2 gene variant with the C allele, which almost doubles the risk of complications. Those patients who do not have this genetic variant tolerate anesthesia much easier and are less likely to experience unpleasant consequences.
“We saw that in some peoples, a gene variant that increases the risk of nausea after anesthesia is noticeably more common,” explained Genotek scientific director Alexander Rakitko.
Ethnic analysis showed the maximum risk among Kabardins, Circassians and Adygeis (41.75%), and the minimum among Koreans (6.5%).
