Victor Ponta, ironic after Trump's statement about Romanians: “I hope he didn't mean that Romanians are on the menu”

Statement by US President Donald Trump, who said that “he likes Romanians“, sparked heated reactions in Bucharest. While some politicians welcomed the message, former Prime Minister Victor Ponta mocked the enthusiasm in the public space, stating that the reaction of the Romanian authorities is “deeply stupid“.

Victor Ponta commented on Donald Trump's statement on social networks, referring to the context in which it was made, a dinner with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán.

“President Trump said he likes Romanians – that's what all the propaganda in Romania reported. But they failed to mention that this beautiful statement was made while he was having dinner with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán! I hope they didn't mean that Romanians are on the menu!”the former prime minister wrote on Facebook.

Ponta continued in an ironic tone, explaining that Trump's sympathy for Romanians would, in fact, have to do with Romanian employees in his family's companies, not with the political class in Romania.

“I think, however, that President Trump has a good opinion of our country because of the Romanians who work extremely well in the Trump family companies; however, he has no idea about the current leaders of Romania“, he added.

The former prime minister also criticized the way in which Bucharest reacted to this statement. “From the point of view of our foreign policy, the fact that the statements about Romania are made at a dinner with the Prime Minister of Hungary is something embarrassing! So the great enthusiasm in Bucharest is profoundly stupid. It was really worth rejoicing if only the Prime Minister of Romania had been at the table at the White House!“, Ponta also wrote.

Trump's statement about Romanians

It all started from a joint press conference between Donald Trump and Viktor Orbán, in which the former American president was asked about the move of American troops from Romania.

“We are still making changes, in total it is the same number, only we are moving more people. I like Romanians a lotI think they are a great people. Pete, if you could say something?said Donald Trump.

For his part, the US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, added: “Nothing we did was uncoordinated with the White House, everything is part of the perspective we have towards Europe and there will be troops in Romania, it will just be a change in the way we do the rotation“.
