Super typhoon Fung-wong hit the northeastern coast of the Philippines before making landfall on Sunday, killing at least two people and forcing more than a million people to leave areas at risk of flash floods, landslides and large waves, Reuters and The Associated Press news agencies report, taken by News.ro.

Torrential rains and strong winds caused power outages in large areas of the Bicol region ahead of the typhoon's landfall in northern Luzon.

More than a million people have been evacuated from vulnerable areas ahead of Super Typhoon Fung-wong's arrival in Aurora province, where it is expected Sunday evening, with authorities urging residents to comply with evacuation orders.

The typhoon could cover two-thirds of the Southeast Asian archipelago, with the cyclone having a diameter of 1,800 kilometers, forecasters said.

The new unleashing of the forces of nature comes as the Philippines is still dealing with the devastating effects of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which last week left at least 224 dead in the central provinces before hitting Vietnam, where at least five people died.

More than 30 million people could be exposed

Super typhoon Fung-wong, the biggest storm to threaten the Philippines this year, began pounding the country's northeastern coast before making landfall on Sunday. A villager drowned in floods in Catanduanes province in the country's east, and another person died in the town of Catbalogan in eastern Samar province after being trapped under debris, officials said.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected calamity from Fung-wong, also called Uwan in the Philippines.

The typhoon came accompanied by winds that could reach up to 230 km/h in gusts. Before noon on Sunday, it was over coastal waters near the city of Pandan in the eastern province of Catanduanes, where heavy rain and fog reduced visibility. It was expected to move northwest and hit the coasts of Aurora or Isabela provinces on Sunday evening or Monday morning, forecasters said.

Tropical cyclones with sustained winds of 185 km/h or greater are classified in the Philippines as super typhoons, a designation adopted years ago to emphasize the urgency of more extreme weather disturbances.

More than 30 million people could be exposed to the dangers posed by Fung-wong, the Civil Defense Office said.
