US Energy Minister Chris Wright criticized the COP30 climate summit on Friday. He said it was harmful and wrong, and called it a hoax, the AP reported. For the first time, there will be no high-ranking representative of the American authorities at the conference.

– This is basically a hoax. This is not an honest organization that wants to improve people's lives, the minister told AP in Athens. He added that he may attend the summit next year to “try to demonstrate some common sense.”

The White House announced that the US will not send any senior government officials to the COP30 summit in Belem, Brazil, which starts on Monday. One White House spokeswoman said Trump “will not jeopardize the country's economy and national security by pursuing opaque climate goals that are devastating other countries.”

Wright, who is one of the vocal opponents of actions to combat climate change, said that world conferences should focus on access to energy, growth and technological advancement, and not on – as he put it – fear-driven ecology.

– Meetings of world leaders and business should be about people (…), not about the desire to scare children and strengthen the government's power – said the minister. – They've lost the plot – he added.

Shortly after taking office on January 20, Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Agreement for the second time. Speaking at the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in September, he attacked leaders who advocate the fight against climate change, claiming that previous predictions of climate catastrophes have not come true. “This is the biggest fraud that has ever been perpetrated on the world,” Trump said.

In addition to the US, the leaders of China and India will also be absent from the conference in Belem. These three countries are the largest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, noted AP.
