The Romanian driver who caused the death of six migrants in Bulgaria, detained for aggravated murder. Prosecutors are seeking his arrest

Prosecutors in Burgas are asking for preventive arrest for the Romanian who on Thursday evening caused the accident that killed six migrants, while he was being pursued by the police, being accused of qualified murder, reports Novinite, quoted by News.ro.
According to the investigators, the Romanian citizen – identified by the initials SK – was at the wheel of a car carrying nine migrants whom he helped to enter and transit the Bulgarian territory illegally.
Prosecutors said he was driving at excessive speed and ignored multiple lights and sounds from Border Patrol agents who were following him in three vehicles. Despite repeated attempts to stop him, SK continued to run.
The film of the fatal accident in Bulgaria
The fatal accident took place around 22:00, near Sportna Street, at the entrance to Burgas. Due to the wet surface of the road and the excessive speed, the vehicle skidded, lost control and fell into the Vaia lake. Six of the migrants died in the accident, and the others were injured.
The driver survived, was detained and charged both with the manslaughter of the victims and with assisting the illegal border crossing.
Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, the head of the Border Police, said earlier that the chase lasted 34 minutes and covered the route between Kiten and Burgas.
The pursuit began after the officers noticed the car near Iasna Poliana and tried to stop it for inspection. Instead, the driver accelerated, continuing to head towards Burgas at a speed of over 150 km/h.
MAE specifications after the accident
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, on Friday evening, in relation to the accident caused by the Romanian driver, that, until now, no requests for consular assistance related to this incident have been received at the Romanian Embassy in Sofia.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), through the Embassy of Romania in Sofia, became aware of the occurrence of an incident on the evening of Thursday, November 6, 2025, on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria, as a result of which a car registered in Romania was involved in a road accident, resulting in several victims. The investigation of the Bulgarian authorities regarding this incident is ongoing”, the MFA transmitted.
