Folk calendar

Dmitriev day

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, also known by the nickname Myrrh-streamer.

In Rus', on Demetrius Day, as on the day before, it was customary to celebrate a funeral for the deceased, especially if this date fell on a Saturday. The same custom existed for the Saturday preceding the saint's name day. This tradition was established by Prince Dmitry Donskoy, who, after the victory in the Battle of Kulikovo, organized a memorial service for all those who died on the battlefield.

“The dead are leading the Dimitri’s day in Rus'. The dead are leading, the living are being watched,” people said. The deceased were shown special respect on this day – they came to cemeteries, commemorated them with words and tears, and when they returned home, they set tables. “If your parents are alive, honor them; if they are dead, remember them,” this rule was strictly observed in Rus'.

There were more cheerful sayings for this day. “Before Dmitr, a girl is cunning, but after Dmitr she will not be so,” people said, implying that girls would begin to get married after this day.

Pay attention to signs. If this day was cold and snowy, then the same spring was expected. “If Demetrius’ Day is in the snow, then so is Holy Easter in the snow,” people noted. The crimson dawn on this day foreshadowed a strong wind, and fogged windows – the onset of cold weather.
