“Russia is the largest Arctic power”
Vladimir Putin speaks at the plenary session of the sixth international forum “The Arctic – Territory of Dialogue.” The main statements from the president:
— Politicians and party leaders in Western countries tell their voters about the importance of the environmental agenda, but in reality they act differently.
— The Arctic has enormous development prospects.
— The role and importance of the Arctic for Russia and the whole world is growing, and the geopolitical struggle in the region is growing.
— Russia is ready to work in the Arctic with all states that are responsible for development issues.
— NATO countries are increasingly considering the Arctic as a springboard for conflict; “recruits” — Finland and Sweden — are active.
— Russia did not threaten anyone in the Arctic.
— Over the past ten years, cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route has increased by an order of magnitude.
— The mechanism of the Arctic Council has degraded today, this is the choice of Western states. Dialogue with Western countries on cooperation in the field of ecosystems in the Arctic has been curtailed.
— Russia does not refuse to communicate in the Arctic Council format, unlike the West, which boycotts the format.
About the annexation of Greenland to the United States:
“It’s stupid to believe that these are extravagant ideas (of Donald Trump). We are talking about serious plans on the part of the American administration.
— The annexation of Greenland by the United States has been incubated since the 60s of the 19th century, but then the annexation of Alaska was ridiculed.
— The Russian Federation must introduce new generation icebreakers and strengthen its position in this area.
— Russia needs its own merchant fleet in the Arctic.
