I bleed air from the batteries without splashing or flooding: I do everything “in my mind” – without unnecessary troubles and hassle

Air in the heating system is a common problem, due to which the radiators heat unevenly, noises and whistles appear, and sometimes the pipes shake.

Correcting the situation is easier than it seems if you know the correct way to bleed air from the radiator in order to do it carefully and avoid leaks and unnecessary work.

What you will need

  • Wrench or screwdriver (depending on the type of valve on the radiator). You can buy a special mini valve at a plumbing store.
  • A small container for water, preferably plastic, so as not to knock on the battery.
  • A rag or paper towel just in case.

Step by step instructions

  1. Make sure the heating system is working and the radiators are warm. Close the main water supply valve, if equipped, to avoid sudden changes in pressure.
  2. Find the air vent. This is usually a small valve at the top end of the radiator. On some models this is a square or round screw.
  3. Place a container and a rag. To prevent water from spilling on the floor, place a cup under the valve and wrap a rag around the joint.
  4. Open the valve. Turn the wrench or screwdriver counterclockwise. You will hear a characteristic hissing sound – this is air coming out.
  5. As soon as a steady stream of water begins to appear, close the valve. This means that the air has escaped.

It is better to vent air when the heating system is on – this makes it easier for the air to escape. Check all radiators in the house – one remaining plug can reduce overall heating efficiency. If air appears frequently, it is worth checking the system for leaks and installing automatic air vents.

Bleeding the radiator is a simple procedure, but care must be taken. After half an hour of operation, your batteries will heat evenly again, the noise will disappear, and the risk of leaks will be minimized.
