Adoption of the euro in Bulgaria – full readiness and plans for 2026

Euro will be the official currency Bulgaria. “We continue to work intensively to ensure a smooth, transparent and successful transition to the common currency,” Zhelazkov emphasized, quoted by the Bulgarian news agency BTA.
During the meeting with the EU Commissioner for the Economy, Valdis Dombrovskis, the Prime Minister noted that the Bulgarian banking sector is fully prepared for the transformation, and deliveries of euro banknotes and coins to banks, post offices and retail outlets began at the beginning of November. The meeting took place in Sofia as part of the conference “Bulgaria on the threshold euro zone“.
One of the key elements of preparations is an extensive information campaign aimed at educating society about the benefits of introducing the euro. Prime Minister Zelazkov announced that since July, when the EU Council approved the last legal acts required to adopt the common currency, over 420 information meetings and conferences have been held. The campaign also includes activities in the media and social networks.
“Sociological research clearly indicates an increase in social trust,” added the Prime Minister, emphasizing the importance of the government's cooperation with public institutions and non-governmental organizations.

EU Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis also commented on the topic, emphasizing that Bulgaria's accession to the euro zone will have a positive impact on the country's financial stability, strengthen its economic resilience and accelerate economic growth.
Nevertheless, as recent polls show, Bulgarian society remains divided on the issue of changing the currency.

Euro in Bulgaria. Since when? Currency of Bulgaria
Bulgaria will become the 21st member of the euro zone. Throughout January 2026, the lev and the euro will operate in parallel, and then the process of phasing out the Bulgarian currency will begin. Until the end of June 2026, residents will be able to exchange leva for euro without additional fees at banks and post offices. After this date, exchange will be possible at branches of the Bulgarian National Bank.
The introduction of the euro in Bulgaria is a step that is intended to strengthen the country's position in the European Union and contribute to its economic development. However, the success of this process will depend on further growth of public trust and effective implementation of planned activities.
