Group layoffs at LG Electronics near Wrocław

The Korean concern LG Electronics is planning mass layoffs in a factory producing refrigerators in Biskupice Podgórne. About 200 people may lose their jobs at the factory near Wrocław. Trade unions have already been notified about the matter, Radio Eska reported.

Concern LG Electronics is planning close department producing refrigerators at its plant in Biskupice Podgórne near Wrocław. As a result, up to 200 plant employees may be unemployed.

Information about collective layoffs has already been forwarded to trade unions.

– The employer should now start the consultation process aimed at reducing the possible number of dismissed employees and other issues related to carrying out these group layoffs, such as training or retraining – says Krzysztof Wołk-Łaniewski from Solidarity in an interview with Eska radio.

According to the company, a voluntary departure program is planned. Although currently there is talk of dismissal nearly 200 people, this number may still change. Even though the employer is closing the refrigerator division, it intends to increase the production of washing machines. Therefore, there is a chance that some employees will be retrained.

According to representatives of the concern, LG Electronics implements strategic decisions tailored to the specificity of the European market and consumer needs in response to ongoing market changes. This is intended to ensure competitiveness by leveraging diversified global production centers.

– We would like to inform you that we are not closing the factory in Wrocław and, as part of strategic decisions, we are developing the production of specific devices to increase the competitiveness of the offer. In connection with LG is optimizing its production structure and product portfolioto focus on expanding the production of washing machines and meet the growing demand in Europe, LG Electronics representatives wrote in a statement.

Will refrigerators be delivered from China?

The company now has less than three weeks to reach an agreement with the trade unions representing employees. During this time, the rules of departures, the amount of severance pay and possible funds for retraining the dismissed people will be established.

According to information from “Gazeta Wrocławska”, the end of the production of refrigerators near Wrocław may be due to the fact that the company also produces them in China, where production is cheaper and from there they are shipped to Europe.
