US President Donald Trump stated on his social media platform that one of the reasons why the election for mayor of New York was won by socialist-democrat Zohran Mamdani, who was fiercely opposed by Republicans, was the fact that voters could not vote for Trump himself.

“According to the polls, (the fact that) TRUMP WAS NOT ON THE BALLOT AND THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN ARE TWO REASONS REPUBLICANS LOSED THE ELECTION TODAY,” the president said on Truth Social on Wednesday.

The US government has been suspended since October 1. This means that some government agencies have stopped functioning, budget employees do not receive salaries, and food aid has also been suspended.

After the election results were announced, Trump posted an ominous post on Truth Social: “… AND THAT'S HOW IT STARTED!”

Just before the election, Trump threatened that if “Communist candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the election for mayor of New York, it is highly unlikely that I will contribute anything but the bare minimum federal funds to my beloved (hometown),” the president wrote on his platform. In an interview for CBS, he explained that if New York is ruled by a communist, the funds transferred to the metropolis will be wasted.

The reluctance of the president and the new mayor is mutual. In his post-election speech, Mamdani did not hide his attitude towards the president. “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that birthed him,” he said. – It's not just a way to stop Trump. It's a way to stop the next one. (PAP)
