Folk calendar

Kazanskaya

On this day they bow to the miraculous Kazan Icon of the Mother of God – one of the most revered in the Russian Orthodox Church.

In Rus', the feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God has always been an important date. It was considered a kind of boundary between autumn and real winter. From that day forward the onset of frost was expected. What they would be like was judged by signs. If they had a good harvest in the fall, they were preparing for a harsh winter. If it rained on Kazanskaya, they expected winter to come soon. “It’s not too cold in Kazanskaya, but it’s not good to stand,” people said. At the same time, it was possible to update the sleigh track: “Go to Kazanskaya on wheels, and put the runners in the cart.”

Weddings were timed to coincide with the holiday of the Kazan Icon. “Whoever marries Kazanskaya will be happy,” people believed. There were sayings and signs about a successful marriage: “Choose a cow by its horns, and a girl by its birth (parents)”; “A good wife and fatty cabbage soup—don’t look for any other good thing”; “Getting married sooner is more profitable at home.” If no one asked the girl to marry, she performed a special ceremony. On Kazanskaya she got up early in the morning and went to the birch grove to find a leaf wrapped in frost. One had to look at such a sheet, as if in a mirror, in order to become attractive to suitors.

Feasts were held not only in honor of the newlyweds, but also for another reason – to meet men who had returned from work in the city. Tables were set for them, pies and pancakes were baked, and guests were invited.
