German authorities announced on Sunday that they had arrested a 22-year-old Syrian in Berlin, suspected of preparing a “jihadist” attack, according to AFP.
The Syrian was arrested on Saturday in Berlin, in the Neukoelln district in the south of the capital, on suspicion of preparing a “jihadist” attack, Deutsche Welle also notes.
The man was planning “an attack motivated by jihadism,” according to a spokesman for Berlin prosecutors. He was detained by a unit of the special police force (SEK).
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said “the terrorist threat in Germany, although often abstract, remains high”.
He said in a statement that the Syrian had been in Germany since 2023 and that his activities, which suggested he was preparing an attack, were detected in time.
“We are extremely vigilant in cooperation with the security authorities for the safety of the people in the capital,” said Interior Minister for the state of Berlin, Iris Spranger.
During searches by a special police unit at three residential addresses associated with the suspect, equipment suitable for making a bomb was seized.
According to prosecutors, the man had distributed propaganda about the terrorist organization “Islamic State” on social networks. The material also included jihadist songs, along with a call to spread them.
