NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Thursday said statements made by US President Donald Trump this week, according to which the alliance countries should break down Russian drones and aircraft if they enter their airspace and believe that such an answer is necessary, Reuters reports.
“If necessary. So, here I am totally agreed with President Trump: if necessary,” Rutte said in an interview for Fox News.
The Secretary General of NATO said that the armies of the alliance states are trained to evaluate such threats and to determine if they can escort Russian aircraft until leaving the Allied territory, as well as if they can take additional measures.
What Donald Trump had stated
On Tuesday, during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski in the margin of the UN General Assembly in New York, Donald Trump said on Tuesday that NATO countries should take Russian airplanes.
“Yes, I think this,” Trump replied to reporters when he was asked about the breaking of NATO airplanes.
Subsequently, he was avoided to say that the United States will join efforts to break down Russian aircraft that violate NATO's airspace.
“It depends on the circumstances,” the American leader said. “But you know, we are very strong like NATO,” he added.
The decision taken by Romania in the case of drones that violate the airspace
In Romania, the security of the national airspace was the main subject on the agenda of the meeting that the Supreme Council of Defense of the country had on Thursday.
CSAT has established that the aircraft and military drones that violate the air space of Romania will be shot down at the decision of the Mission commander, according to the NATO rules, and the civil ones at the Defense Minister's decision. Authorities will update the list of objectives to be protected.
“Today I have completed this legal framework with the methodologies regarding the objectives that need drones. This was a point on the agenda. Here all the institutions in the defense system can define, there is a list of objectives that need to be protected, which are updated according to realities. It can include a list of temporary objectives – in the case of an important event, as a result, as a matter of fact, as well as in this case. said the Minister of Defense, Ionuț Mosteanu.
