At least 124 tribal groups are isolating themselves from the rest of Brazilian society, according to a report published on Monday by the non-governmental organization Survival International. There are 72 other isolated peoples living around the world.

The association specializing in studies and activities to protect communities that avoid contact with civilization said that Brazil is the country with the largest number of this type of tribal groups in the world.
According to the report, there are a total of 196 tribal groups isolated from civilization in the world and living in forest areas. The largest concentration of surveyed communities is the Amazon Forest.
These tribal communities, engaged mainly in hunting, fishing and plant gathering, live outside Brazil in Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Paraguay, as well as in India and Indonesia.
Over 96 percent isolated peoples, according to the document, are at risk due to the ongoing deforestation and extraction of mineral resources in their areas. (PAP)
