“In view of the testing programs of other countries, I have instructed the War Department to begin testing our nuclear weapons on an equal footingTrump wrote on social media, just before meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country, the White House leader said. Russia ranks second and China one “distant third place“.
It would be the first nuclear tests in over 30 years
The US has not conducted nuclear weapons tests since 1992.
Donald Trump's request comes just days after Trump denounced Russia for testing a nuclear-powered missile that would have an unlimited range.
In Wednesday night's post, Trump admits “enormous destructive power” of nuclear weapons, but says that “no choice” than to update and refurbish the US arsenal during his first term.
The White House leader also said that China's nuclear program “it will be ready within 5 years”.
Trump says 'trial will begin immediately'
The US president's post does not include details on how the tests will take place, but it does say that “the trial will begin immediately.”
The nuclear tests called for by Trump mark an apparent reversal of a longstanding US policy. The last US nuclear test took place in 1992, before former Republican President George HW Bush issued a moratorium with the end of the Cold War.
We remind you that US President Donald Trump categorized as “inappropriate” the announcement made on Monday by Vladimir Putin regarding a successful test of the Russian Burevestnik nuclear-powered cruise missile, also nicknamed the “Flying Chernobyl”.
On Sunday, Vladimir Putin announced the successful final test of a Russian nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Bourevestnik, praising the weapon “unique” with a range of up to 14,000 km, in full war with Ukraine.
“It is a unique creation that no one else in the world has,” said the Russian president, according to whom Bourevestnik (“storm bird” in Russian) has an “unlimited range”.
On October 21, during the last test, the cruise missile flew “about 15 hours”covering 14,000 km, stated the head of the Russian General Staff, Valeri Gurașimov, adding that “this is not a limit” for the vaunted weapon.
