The Golden Tenement House, also called the Steffens House, is a historic building at ul. Długa in Gdańsk, built at the beginning of the 17th century, with a façade decorated with gilded stone reliefs. A characteristic element are the four stone figures crowning the attic, representing the cardinal virtues – Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance.
The building was rebuilt after 1945, later it changed owners, and recently it housed the Maritime Institute, which has been operating within the structures of the Maritime University for several years. When he was moved to a new premises, the tenement house was put up for sale. As Dr. Zuzanna Szwedek-Kwiecińska, spokeswoman for the Maritime University, told “Gazeta Wyborcza” a year ago, the university's goal was “to offer the Golden Tenement House for sale to an unlimited circle of recipients in order to obtain the highest possible price.”
A tender was announced and the offers were opened on June 16 this year. The starting price was just under PLN 19.7 million. One entity came forward and offered to buy the monument for PLN 60 million. Although the tender procedure was public, the Maritime University, which is supervised by the Ministry of Infrastructure, did not disclose data about the bidder. Now he also left it a secret.
“The transaction did not take place, the bidder withdrew. To protect the interest of the university, we are forced to refrain from providing further information,” says Dr. Zuzanna Szwedek-Kwiecińska in a statement quoted by gdansk.pl. He adds that the matter will be discussed during the university council.
Withdrawal before the transaction is finalized means the loss of the deposit paid by the mysterious bidder. The amount is PLN 1.9 million.
