Folk calendar

Paraskeva Gryaznukha, Paraskeva Friday

On this day, the memory of Saint Paraskeva of Serbia, who lived in the 11th century, is celebrated. According to the life, the miraculously found relics of Paraskeva became famous for the numerous miracles that happened next to them.

In Rus', Paraskeva was given an unkind nickname – Gryaznuha. The saint must owe this to the damp weather and slush that usually accompanied the day of her memory. “It’s never dry on Gryaznukha,” people said. The amount of dirt was used to predict when winter would come. If the mud is so great that the horse's hoof print is immediately filled with water, it means there are four weeks left until winter. In addition, heavy mud promised plenty of rain in the spring.

Paraskeva also had other nicknames – Flax, Trepalnitsa. On this day, housewives began to ruffle and crumple flax. But spinning and washing was not recommended for Paraskeva, although it was quite possible to sew. In some areas the saint was revered as the patroness of all women's winter work.

If the saint's memorial day fell on the fifth day of the week, a special holiday was celebrated – Paraskeva Friday. This name corresponded to the image of a tall, thin woman with long hair. Particular attention on Paraskeva Friday was paid to women in labor and pregnant women. They believed that the saint herself was protecting them. In order not to anger Paraskeva and not to lose her help during childbirth, pregnant women tried not to comb their hair on Fridays. They also said that whoever laughs a lot on Friday will cry a lot in old age.
