Every gardener has probably more than once encountered the problem of wheatgrass – this insidious weed that grows underground with incredible speed. Its roots form a dense network, and even after careful digging it comes back again. But there is an environmentally friendly and effective way to fight it – the right green manure. They not only displace wheatgrass, but also improve the structure of the soil, saturate it with useful elements and prepare the beds for the new season.
What kind of green manure will help get rid of wheatgrass forever
White mustard is one of the most effective crops against wheatgrass. Its dense roots literally “strangle” the weed, not giving it room to grow. In addition, mustard disinfects the soil, destroys pest larvae and enriches the soil with sulfur and phosphorus.
After growth, do not destroy the greens, dig them up with soil, it will serve as a natural fertilizer.
Oats creates a dense root system that displaces wheatgrass from its territory. It perfectly loosens the soil and prepares it for spring planting. Oats are suitable for any type of soil and do not require special care.
Winter rye not only inhibits the growth of weeds, but also releases substances that stop the development of wheatgrass. After it, the land becomes loose, fertile and clean. In spring, the rye can be dug up or left as mulch.
Lupine perennial not only destroys weeds, it also enriches the soil with nitrogen, which makes it indispensable for depleted areas. Its powerful roots penetrate deep into the ground, “cutting” the wheatgrass rhizomes. Result: within a season you will notice that the wheatgrass has practically disappeared.
