The BNR will introduce into the numismatic circuit, for the first time, a copper tombac coin with a colored surface, starting from October 27, 2025.
“It will be a colored coin, the first of its kind issued by the NBR. Also on Monday, in Cluj, in a festive setting, I will have the honor to present the coin and its design and to open the proceedings of the symposium “Lucian Blaga – The man, the works, the banknotes”, organized by my colleagues at the headquarters of the Cluj Regional Branch”, says Cristian Popa, member of the board of the Central Bank.

The theme of the show is Lucian Blaga – 130 years since his birth.
The nominal value of the coin is 1 leu, the weight is 23.5 g and the maximum mintage for the copper tombac coin is 5,000 pieces.
Also on Monday, an exhibition will be opened in Cluj, which will include, among many others, a printed sheet, films for color decompositions, watermarked paper as well as a fragment of watermarking screen and also banknote projects that will be exhibited to the public for the first time, says Cristian Popa.
Lucian Blaga is on the 200 lei banknote (since 2006) and he also appeared on the 5,000 lei banknote in the 90s. As of Monday, the first colored coin issued by the BNR has also entered numismatic history, says the BNR official.
