Fuel prices at stations were slightly lower this week than the week before. Nevertheless, the reductions in gasoline prices, which were just a few cents, were inadequate to what happened on the wholesale market.

In the penultimate week of October, the average retail price of unleaded 95 gasoline was at PLN 5.84/l and was 4 groszy lower than a week ago – according to BM Reflex data. The price of diesel oil, on average across the country, decreased by PLN 5/l PLN 5.92/l. Autogas was refueled after an average of PLN 2.63/l, so 3 groszy/l cheaper than a week ago.

It is worth remembering here that we are writing about average prices throughout the country. Prices at individual stations may vary by up to several dozen cents per liter, depending on the location and the strength of local competition. For example, in Wrocław, for a long time you can find stations offering Pb95 gasoline for less than PLN 5.50/l.
Trump imposes sanctions. How will fuel prices react?
The highlight of the week on the fuel markets were the first American sanctions on Russian oil companies during President Trump's term. Under pressure from Washington, Indian refineries were about to give up direct purchases of oil from Russia. Similar signals also came from China, where, under the influence of American sanctions, Chinese companies were to give up Russian transported by sea.
It is not yet known how these disruptions in crude oil supply chains will translate into the prices of petroleum products. Some experts expect an increase in fuel prices in Poland of 5-7 groszy per liter as a result. This applies in particular to diesel oil, which Europe imports from Asia.
Too expensive petrol and diesel at PLN 6/l
In response to US sanctions, the price of Brent crude oil jumped from USD 60 to almost USD 66 per barrel. But the prices of finished fuels reacted differently. December gasoline futures were trading at $1.87 a gallon on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday. It's a little more than a week ago ($1.74/gallon), but then gasoline prices were the lowest since 2021.
In such a system, gasoline in Poland could be much cheaper than it is currently. Let's just remind you that At the beginning of 2021, with similar prices for Brent crude oil and gasoline, we paid PLN 4.70-4.90 per liter of Pb95 at domestic stations. Now it is about PLN 1 per liter more.
The situation is slightly worse with diesel oil, which was traded at USD 705/t on the London ICE exchange on Friday. This is as much as 14% more than a week ago. In this way, diesel prices on the stock exchange returned to the levels… at the end of September. We saw this move today in Orlen's price list. On October 24, the Płock refinery offered Ekodiesel fuel at PLN 4,649/m3, which after vating gives PLN 5.72/l. This is 15 cents more expensive per liter than a week ago and almost the same as two weeks ago. If the increase in wholesale prices continues, we may face retail prices starting from PLN 6/l.
At the same time retailers still have plenty of room to reduce Pb95 gasoline prices. This is because in Orlen's Friday price list, Eurosuper95 gasoline cost PLN 4,470/m3, which after adding 23% VAT (excise duty, fuel surcharge and other para-taxes are already included in the wholesale price) gives just under PLN 5.50/l. That is as much as PLN 34/l below the average retail price. The average value of this parameter in the last 20 years was PLN 25/l.
It is also worth remembering that fuels could be much cheaper if it were not for taxes imposed by the authorities. From every liter of gasoline or diesel oil purchased, over 50% goes to the state. Without paying tribute to the government, we could fill up with Pb95 petrol for approx. PLN 2.70/l, diesel for approx. PLN 2.80/l, and autogas for approx. PLN 1.50/l.
