Wave of measles cases in Israel

In the central part of Israel, including Jerusalem, there has been a wave of cases of this disease since May. The epidemic mainly affects children. Five of them died. Health authorities emphasize that none of them has been vaccinated and appeal for vaccination of children. At the end of August, the Ministry of Health reported 770 confirmed infections, but earlier announcements warned that the real number of infections may be several times higher.

Measles is an infectious viral disease. It spreads through air and droplets. Symptoms of the disease include fever, severe cough, maculopapular rash, conjunctivitis, photophobia and rhinitis. Complications after measles are quite common. Minor ones include, for example, otitis media and gastrointestinal infection, and more serious ones include, among others: meningitis.

Vaccination is the only known way to protect against this disease. The commonly used measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is given in two doses – the first at the age of 13-15 months, the second – around the age of six.

The reports of the National Institute of Public Health – PZH National Research Institute show that from January 1 to October 15 this year, 75 cases of measles were recorded in Poland.
