The causes of the incident were not disclosed. The Ostorozno Nowosti portal reported a drone attack on the factory, but Teksler denied this information. Nevertheless, after the explosions in Chelyabinsk, a warning was issued about the presence of an unmanned aerial vehicle, eyewitnesses reported on the Astra channel.

Kopeysk is located approximately 1,800 km from the Russian-Ukrainian front line. The Russian state-owned corporation Rostiech (Rostec) owns the Plastmass plant.
