New EU sanctions on Russia. All unanimous

EU countries have approved the 19th package of sanctions against Russia for its war with Ukraine, the Danish EU Presidency announced on Wednesday, quoted by TVP World.
According to PAP, it is among others for a ban on importing Russian LNG from 2027. The package also included a transaction ban for Rosneft and Gazprom Neft and sanctions on further ships from the so-called Russian shadow fleet used to circumvent oil sanctions.

“We are very pleased to announce that we have just received information from the remaining Member State that it is now in a position to withdraw its reservations regarding the 19th sanctions package. A written procedure has therefore been launched to obtain Council consent. If no objections are received, the package will be adopted tomorrow at 8“, it was reported.
This country was Slovakia – the Prime Minister of this country, Robert Fico, had earlier announced the withdrawal of the veto. Although he is critical of the effectiveness of sanctions against Russia, pointing out that “Russians have become self-sufficient where they were not before”, he nevertheless declares support for the 19th package of restrictions.

Fico also announced that, at the request of the Hungarian authorities, he would represent Prime Minister Viktor Orban during the summit. On his behalf, he intends to oppose the adoption of the provisions regarding Ukraine. As a result, these documents will not be accepted unanimously, but only by 26 EU member states.
EU diplomats emphasize that the key goal of the new sanctions is to further limit Russia's income from oil and gas exports. The Community is considering introducing special limits on trade in Russian oil to prevent circumvention of the restrictions.
