Folk calendar

Tryphon and Pelageya

On this day the memory of two saints is celebrated – Tryphon of Vyatka and Pelagia of Antioch. Tryphon was born in the 16th century in the village of Malye Nemnyushki in the Arkhangelsk province. On this day, Pelagia of Antioch, who lived in the 3rd century, is also venerated.

In Rus' at this time the approach of winter was becoming more and more noticeable. “It’s getting colder from Tryphon-Pelageya,” people said. To avoid being taken by surprise by the frosts, it was necessary to prepare warm clothes in advance. On this day, housewives took out sheepskin coats, fur coats, hats, and mittens and looked to see if they needed repairing. “Trifon is mending his fur coat, Pelageya is sewing mittens,” they said.

On Pelageya (Pelagia) and Tryphon, the owners lowered barrels of cucumbers and cabbage pickled for the winter to the bottom of the rivers. This was a successful invention of the Russian people: under the ice, the water temperature never dropped below zero degrees, so the food did not spoil, but did not freeze either. If necessary, they chopped wormwood in the ice, took the barrels out into the light of day, and delicious pickles appeared on the peasant table in the middle of winter.

Also on this day, as usual, they began to prepare new fields – they cut down and burned the forest.
