Acting General Mayor Stelian Bujduveanu and prefect Andrei Nistor talked on Saturday evening with the tenants of the staircase affected by the explosion that took place on Friday morning in a block of flats in the Rahova district, presenting them with the “preliminary conclusions and short- and medium-term solutions”.

The mayor said that he “conveyed to all those affected that they will not remain homeless and that the Capital City Hall will provide them with constant support until the housing situation is restored.”

“In a first stage, the tenants benefit from temporary accommodation in hotel units, for 7 days. Later, they will be relocated to City Hall housing or they will be able to rent other spaces, with financial support from the municipality,” said Stelian Bujduveanu, in a post on Facebook, after the discussion on Saturday evening.

Prefect Andrei Nistor also spoke about the discussed measures.

“All affected tenants benefit from up to 7 days of hotel accommodation (…). After the completion of the investigation, we will analyze the possibility that the tenants in the stairs not directly affected by the explosion can safely return to their homes,” the official wrote on his Facebook page.

He said that “The Directorate of Social Assistance will provide help to tenants of the scale directly affected by: settlement of rent for rented apartments; support through NGOs to find rentals; apartments made available by the municipality.”

What happens to the building

The interim mayor of the Capital stated that the “final decision” regarding a possible decommissioning of the building will be taken after the technical expertise.

“Following the technical report on the building in Str. Vicina no. 1, it appears that the building will most likely be decommissioned. We will take the final decision following the technical expertise to be carried out”, declared Stelian Bujduveanu.

The mayor said that making the area safe is a priority.

“In the next period, our priority is to secure the building and the surrounding area: the assets that can be saved will be recovered, the protection of the nearby school will be ensured, the best option for restoring the building will be identified”, added Bujduveanu.

Prefect Andrei Nistor mentioned that “the Bucharest Streets Administration will pick up and transport the damaged cars from the area, with the support of the Bucharest Municipal Parking Company and under the coordination of the Police”, and “they will be temporarily stored in the STB premises, until the completion of the legal procedures”.

The conclusions of the report made by the State Construction Inspectorate show that the 2nd staircase of block 32 in Rahova, where the explosion occurred on Friday morning, can no longer be used in any form and must be decommissioned and replaced. Experts believe that a consolidation is not technically and economically justified.
