The US is toughening its narrative towards Greenland. “Using the army is always an option”

“President Trump has made it clear that acquiring Greenland is a U.S. national security priority and is crucial to deterring our adversaries in the Arctic region,” Leavitt wrote in response to questions from PAP and other media about Trump's recent statements and declarations of European allies on this subject.

“The President and his team are discussing a range of options on how to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and the use of U.S. military forces is, of course, always an option at the Commander's disposal,” she added.

The spokeswoman's statement is another signal from the White House of its intention to annex the island, which has the status of an autonomous territory dependent on Denmark. As reported by Reuters, a senior US administration official added to the above statement that the issue of Greenland “will not go away”, regardless of the position of NATO leaders. This is a reference to the statement by the leaders of seven European countries, including the Prime Minister of Poland, that only Denmark and Greenland can make decisions about their future.

On Monday, Trump's top adviser Stephen Miller, who was also said to be one of the architects of the attack on Venezuela, announced that the US would annex Greenland and America's allies would not fight with it over the island.

— The United States is the power of NATO. For the United States to secure the Arctic region and protect and defend NATO and the interests of the Alliance, Greenland should be part of the United States, Miller said in an interview with CNN. – We live in a world (…) ruled by force – he added. He also questioned the basis of Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland, calling it a Danish colony.

Trump himself stressed on Sunday during a meeting with journalists that he did not want to talk about Greenland – asking journalists to ask him about it in a few weeks. However, a moment later he added that America needs an island. He added that Russian and Chinese ships are circling around Greenland and Denmark is unable to ensure the safety of the island.

– I can tell you that in order to increase security in Greenland (the Danes – PAP) they imported another dog sled – the US president mocked. He added that the European Union actually needs the US to take control of the island and that the EU knows about it.
