One autumn watering with a special homemade infusion – and the carrots grow large, bright and sweet, as if from a country poster

Autumn is the time when the harvest has already been harvested, but caring for future beds is just beginning. Now is the time to lay the foundation for strong, sweet and juicy root vegetables for next season. Experienced summer residents know: in order for carrots to sprout well and delight you with the harvest, you need to take care of the soil in advance. One of the simplest and most reliable methods is autumn watering with an infusion of onion peels.

This modest “waste” from the kitchen is actually rich in minerals: the husk contains potassium, phosphorus, calcium and phytoncides – natural antiseptics that suppress the development of harmful microorganisms in the soil. Autumn watering with this infusion helps to disinfect the soil, saturate it with nutrients and repel pest larvae that overwinter in the soil.

How to prepare an infusion

  1. Collect about a glass of dry onion peels.
  2. Pour in 3 liters of hot water.
  3. Cover with a lid and leave to steep for 1-2 days.
  4. Strain and dilute the infusion with water in a ratio of 1:2.

The resulting solution is used to water the beds where carrots will grow next year. It is better to do this in dry weather, when the ground is not yet frozen. After watering, you can lightly loosen the soil – this will allow the infusion to penetrate deeper.

Already in the spring, carrots sprout quickly and evenly in such a bed. Root vegetables grow large, juicy and acquire a characteristic sweetness that cannot be achieved in poor or acidic soil.

Can I use red onion skins?

Yes, it is even richer in composition – it contains more antioxidants and flavonoids.

How often should this treatment be carried out?

Once in the fall before frost is enough. In spring, you can repeat light watering before planting.
