Folk calendar
Erofeev day
On this day the memory of the holy martyr Hierotheos, who lived in Athens in the 1st century, is celebrated.
“From Erofei, winter puts on a fur coat,” they said in Rus', noting that “from Erofei, the cold is stronger.”
The people believed that on Erofei (Ierotheus) goblins wander through the forests, while shouting loudly, clapping their hands and laughing. This “fun” continues until the next morning: with the first roosters, the forest spirit falls through the ground, only to jump out again in the spring. On this day they tried not to go into the forest, even in case of extreme need. “The goblin is not his own brother: he will break bones no worse than a bear,” people said.
