In Krasnoyarsk, a quarantine brown wrinkled fruit virus (ToBRFV) was detected in a batch of tomatoes imported from China weighing over 1.5 tons. This was reported in the local branch of the Federal Centercenter for assessing the safety and quality of agricultural products.
The information was sent to Rosselkhoznadzor for further action.
It is noted that earlier this year, infection of imported vegetables with the ToBRFV virus was registered only twice: in July, the pathogen was found in 18.8 tons of tomatoes from Uzbekistan, and in April – in a batch of peppers from China.
“Although this virus is not dangerous to humans, it can cause significant damage to plants from the nightshade family – destroy up to 80% of the crop. Transmission of disease pathogens occurs through direct contact between plants, when using contaminated garden tools, soil, as well as through the hands of workers and their clothing,” experts said.
It is also noted that it is critically important for the Russian economy to quickly detect fruits and vegetables infected with quarantine pests and diseases, because thanks to timely diagnosis, their spread can be prevented and large losses can be avoided.
