At the Berezovsky open-pit mine (a branch of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk), the construction of a complex for the production of coal sorbent of increased size and with improved strength characteristics continues.
“Coal scientists have developed a technology for layered gasification of brown coal, which makes it possible to obtain a completely new product. In December 2024, pilot production was put into operation on the basis of the Berezovsky open-pit mine, and during this time more than 700 tons of the target product were produced there alone,” says Roman Polevoy, technical director of the Berezovsky open-pit mine. “For the industrial production of the new sorbent, at the beginning of 2025, we began construction of two departments for gasification and drying of coal, coal preparation and a section for the preparation and shipment of finished products.”
The foundation for these production sites has been almost completely prepared, and metal structures have been partially installed. The installation of process equipment in the coal preparation department is being completed. The main technological equipment has begun to arrive for the gasification and coal drying departments, and its commissioning will begin at the beginning of 2026.
“Even today, thanks to our developments, the Krasnoyarsk Territory is a leader in the processing of brown coal,” notes Sergey Stepanov, head of the department of innovative coal processing technologies of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk. “New production facilities will allow us to expand the range of innovative products: sorbent will be produced here for oil refining, metallurgy and waste incineration plants.”
Let us remind you that the specialists of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk, together with one of its divisions, LLC Coal-Engineering, have been dealing with issues of deep processing of brown coal for more than 20 years. In 2007, the first installation for partial gasification of coal in a fluidized bed was put into operation at the Berezovsky open-pit mine. The unique technology made it possible to launch the production of a new product – thermocoke.
Subsequently, a whole range of innovative materials was developed on its basis: in 2013, coal miners began producing briquetted fuel for metallurgy, and in 2017 they launched production of “Siberian briquette” – a smokeless fuel. In 2020, the first stage of a complex for deep processing of brown coal was built at the Berezovsky open-pit mine.
Today, in addition to fuel briquettes, the company produces lining material for the aluminum industry, sorbent for oil refining and water treatment. The total design capacity of the enterprise is about 30 thousand tons/year. After the commissioning of the second stage of the complex, it will increase by 1.5 times. In particular, the Berezovsky open-pit mine ranks first in Russia in the production of carbon sorbents, providing more than half of sales in this market segment.
