

The Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 2025 falls on October 14. According to popular beliefs and traditions, there are a number of prohibitions and recommendations on the holiday, Izvestia (18+) reports.
In Rus', the Intercession acquired special significance and became associated in folk tradition with the onset of winter, the completion of agricultural work and the beginning of the wedding season. It is believed that from this day onwards “winter” begins – the time when nature prepares for winter peace.
Folk signs and beliefs
If the leaves of the trees completely fell off on Pokrov, this foreshadowed a light and snowy winter. However, if the leaves remained, a cold and frosty winter was expected. Based on bird observations, predictions were also made: if the cranes flew away before the Intercession, the winter would be cold, and if after, it would be warm.
If snow fell on this day, it was believed that the winter would be long and snowy. While rain on Pokrov meant that autumn would be warm and rainy. A sign of a good autumn was also a squirrel that changed its coat for the Intercession. If the wind on Pokrov was from the east or west, the winter promised to be harsh. The wind from the south foreshadowed a mild winter, and from the north – a snowy one.
It was believed that if all the housework was not completed before the Intercession, the winter would be cold and difficult. Also on this day, a ritual of “baking corners” was held: the housewife walked around the house with pancakes, read prayers and placed them in the corners, asking for the well-being and protection of the house.
Young women also burned their old straw bed, and old women burned their worn-out bast shoes, wishing for health and well-being. Also on this day, mothers poured water over their children through a sieve on the doorstep to protect them from winter colds.
What not to do on the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary
On Pokrov it is forbidden to engage in heavy physical work: cleaning, washing, sewing, knitting, digging and other household chores. This time should be devoted to prayer, rest and spiritual cleansing.
On this day it is also not customary to quarrel, swear or use foul language. It is believed that such actions can bring troubles and misfortunes into the home. It is not recommended to make promises that cannot be kept or to borrow money. It is believed that unfulfilled promises or debts can lead to financial difficulties in the future.
Intercession is a day of joy and gratitude. On this day you should not be sad, complain about fate or be in a bad mood. It is best to spend it surrounded by loved ones, in an atmosphere of love and mutual understanding.
On Pokrov it is recommended to refrain from alcohol abuse and gluttony. Moderation in food and drink promotes spiritual purification and health.
