If you're tired of jars “shooting” or the lids bulging after just a week, forget about boiling the lids for 10 minutes. There is a simple method that is used by those who have been making preparations for years, and it takes less time than brewing tea.
Sterilizing lids in the oven:
- Wash the lids with baking soda and rinse well.
- Place them on a dry baking sheet, uncovered.
- Place in a cold oven, turn the heat up to 100°C and keep for 5 minutes.
- It is important not to place the lids in an already preheated oven, otherwise they may become deformed.
This method is safer than boiling because the heat kills not only bacteria, but also mold spores that often remain in the gum. The lids heat up evenly, the rubber does not peel off, and the seal remains elastic.
To be safe, before sealing, wipe the neck of the jar with a clean napkin soaked in vodka or apple cider vinegar. This will disinfect the surface and remove any remaining dust.
Following this technique, you will forget about swollen lids and damaged workpieces.
