Seven Russian tourists were poisoned by wild persimmons in Thailand. Two are in serious condition in the intensive care unit of a Thai hospital.
A group of five men and two women came to Surat Thani to take a walk in the Khao Na Nai Luang Dharma Natural Park. There, on the side of the road, they noticed a tree with persimmons, picked the fruits and ate them. An hour and a half later, we received symptoms of poisoning: vomiting, fainting, chest pain, nausea and foam at the mouth. Two tourists went home for treatment, the rest were taken to two hospitals. Three had their stomachs washed, two more are in serious condition. As it turns out, the fruit they ate was Phol Sam Klur, which in simple terms is a wild relative of the persimmon. It is dangerous to eat raw because of the toxins it releases.
For this, tourists may face a fine of up to 6k baht (16k rubles) or up to three years in prison. This is because, according to local laws, it is impossible to pick fruits from trees, even in public places, since each of them has its own owner. There it is regarded as theft.
