The first lady of the US, Melania Trump, announced on Friday that eight Ukrainian children in Russia have returned to their families in the last 24 hours, thanks to a “communication channel” that has been established with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, according to EFE, taken by Agerpres.

“My team worked directly with President Putin's team to ensure the safety of children with their families between Russia and Ukraine. In fact, eight children have gathered with their families in the last 24 hours,” said the first lady in an official declaration from the White House.

According to his explanations, the communication between the two teams was very fluid since August, when, during the meeting in Alaska, President Donald Trump awarded his Russian counterpart a letter signed by Melania, asking him to protect children from war.

Discussions with the Russian side

“When President Putin received my letter in August, he replied in writing, showing himself to initiate a direct dialogue with me and giving me detailed information about Ukrainian children living in Russia. Since then, President Putin and I have maintained an open communication channel on the well-being of these children,” she said.

The first lady stressed that, in recent months, both parties have wore telephone calls and organized meetings in which they agreed to “cooperate each other” for the benefit of the people affected by this war.

Of the eight children who are already with their families, she explained that three were transferred to Russia without their parents because of the “struggles on the front line”, and the other five were “separated from their families because of the conflict.”

Ukrainian officials and human rights organizations have documented evidence that Russian forces have abducted Ukrainian children and deported them to Russia, the TSN Ukrainian television station points out in this context.

Melania also stated that Russia would have agreed to allow their families with their families to go to this country (ie in Russia) while they were minors and who were now 18 years old. “This is still an effort in the process. There are already plans for meeting more children in the near future. I hope the peace will come soon; it can start with our children,” she concluded.

The letter to Putin in August

In August, the first lady of the US, Melania Trump, sent a “letter of peace” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to protect children from around the world. President Donald Trump personally handed his letter a little before their Alaska summit, where Putin immediately read it in front of both delegations.

The letter begins with “Dear President Putin”, the first lady adding that all children, regardless of where they are born – whether it is a rural village or a crowded city – share the same dreams about love, opportunities and safety.

“As parents, it is our duty to feed the hope of the next generation. As leaders, the responsibility to support our children extends beyond our comfort,” she said.

Pleading for a worthy world in which everyone can live in peace, she wrote: “The descendants of each generation begin their lives with a purity – an innocence that stands above geography, governance and ideology.”
