The Foreign Minister of the State Malta, a member country of the European Union, announced on Thursday that he nominated on US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, writes Reuters.

In a Facebook post, Ian Borg mentioned Trump's success in negotiating peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan and his efforts to conclude wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2025 will be announced on Friday in Norway, although the deadline for Nobel prizes of each year is January 31.

The leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia signed an agreement in the White House in August to put an end to the decades conflict between the two countries, a step described by Trump as “historian”.

On Thursday, Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas signed an agreement to cease fire and release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, during the first phase of Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza.

Borg has uploaded a photo with him with Melania Trump and the US president, who has long coveted at the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

“I handed the US President a letter I wrote on my behalf, in which I informed him that, like many others, I nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize,” he said.

“I also urged him to continue to make efforts for the Middle East and Ukraine,” Borg wrote, adding that “he is delighted to see today an increased commitment that brings us closer to peace.”

Trump has repeatedly stated that he deserves this distinction, which was previously granted to four of his predecessors at the White House.

Some countries have announced their support for the “candidacy” of the White House leader this year, including Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on July 8 that his country would nominate Trump at the Nobel Prize, for his efforts to mediate a Hamas armistice. Netanyahu handed him to the American leader, during a dinner at the White House a copy of the letter sent to the Nobel committee by which the nomination was made.

Tuesday, President Taiwanese Lai Ching Tei said, in an interview with the US, that Donald Trump should receive the Nobel Peace Prize if he manages to convince his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to give up the use of force against Taiwan.
