The European Parliament condemns Russia's challenges and demands a unified EU-NATO defense: “Substantial intensification of Cooperation in the field of Defense with Ukraine”

The European Parliament adopted on Thursday, October 9, a resolution that firmly condemns the air space violations and the deliberate interference on Russia on the European Union infrastructure and NATO member states.

MEPs demand coordinated and proportional actions, including the possibility of breaking the air threats, strengthening the EU-NATO common defense and additional sanctions against Moscow and its allies.

The resolution denounces “Impurnt and climbing actions” of Russia, which violated the airspace of Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania, as well as drone attacks on critical infrastructure in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. MEPs claim that these actions are part of a “Systematic military and hybrid war” carried by Russia against the European Union and its partners.

The European Parliament encourages Member States to take coordinated and united measures to defend air space, including by breaking drones and other air threats. Deputies welcome initiatives such as the project of the EU “Antidron Wall” and the Eastern Flank Surveillance Plan, but stresses that all Member States must benefit from equal protection, including those on the southern flank.

European deputies say that Russia's hybrid activities and sabotage acts are “State sponsored terrorism” And I ask the Union to increase its determination and unity. It also requests the extension of sanctions to countries that support Moscow's actions, such as Belarus, Iran and North Korea, but also against Chinese entities involved in providing military equipment.

Regarding the common defense, the Parliament advocates for closer cooperation between the EU and NATO, as well as to accelerate the formation of a European defense union. MEPs propose the allocation of additional funds and strengthen the coordination between the civil and military air space.

“The resolution requires a substantial intensification of cooperation in the field of defense with Ukraine, especially in terms of drone technology and countermeasures, including by strengthening industrial cooperation. The text also urges the collectors to complete the legislation on the European Defense Program (EDIP). The text was adopted with 469 votes for, 97 against and 38 abstentions.
